The small print, in plain words
Privacy Policy
What we collect, why we collect it, and how to get it back or get rid of it.
Historical Conquest LLC runs this website. We collect as little as we can get away with, we never sell it, and everything below is a description of what the site actually does — not a legal shield.
1. What we collect
If you create a player account
- Your first name, last name and email address.
- Whether you confirmed the email, and whether you ticked the newsletter box.
- The IP address and browser you signed up from, and which page and which referrer brought you here — so we know whether people find the game through Facebook, Google or a friend.
We ask for a real address and confirm it with a code because the game is free and we would rather know who is playing than serve an anonymous crowd. We do not ask for a password, and we never see one.
If you buy something
- Your name, email, shipping address and optional phone number.
- What you ordered, what it cost, and how you chose to have it shipped.
- Anything you type into the order notes.
We never see your card details. Card payments are handled by Stripe, who take the card data directly; we receive only a confirmation that a payment succeeded.
Always: a count of how many times each page is read
Every page sends one message when it opens, saying which page it was, roughly how wide the window was, and which website you came from if you followed a link — the site's name, like "google.com", never the full address or anything you searched for.
That message carries no visitor id, no session id and no cookie, and we do not store your IP address or your browser details from it. It is added to a running total and nothing else. The most anyone can ever learn from it is a sentence like "this article was read 214 times on Tuesday, mostly on phones, mostly from Google". It cannot be used to tell that two pages were read by the same person, to tell a returning reader from a new one, or to connect a read to your account, your order or anything else.
We do this without asking because the cookie banner only appears on the home page, and most people reading an article arrive from a search engine and never see the home page. Without this count we would have no idea which of our articles are worth writing more of. We think counting something that identifies nobody is a fair thing to do without interrupting you; if you disagree, tell us at office@historicalconquest.com and we will turn it off.
If you accept the cookie banner
- A random visitor id stored in your browser, and a session id for the tab.
- Your IP address, and a salted hash of it.
- Your browser, operating system, device type, screen size, language and time zone.
- Which pages you viewed, how long for, and how far down you scrolled.
- Where on the page you clicked, stored as percentages rather than pixels, so we can see which buttons people actually press.
- Your approximate country, region and city, derived from the network connection — not from GPS, and never precise.
- The referrer and any campaign tags in the link you followed.
We use the hashed IP to tell a returning visitor from a new one. The raw IP is kept for troubleshooting and abuse handling. If you decline the banner we collect none of this — no visit record, no IP, no clicks — and we remember that you declined.
The banner appears on the home page only. If you have never landed on the home page you have never been asked, and until you are, nothing in this section is collected about you at all — only the anonymous count described above. Your answer is remembered per browser, so accepting once covers the whole site and declining once stops it everywhere.
If you are signed in and working through a lesson
- Which chapters you have opened, which of the eight tabs you looked at, and whether you played a video.
- How many times you have taken each chapter exam and your best score — not every attempt, so retaking a paper to improve cannot count against you.
- The written exam answer and the activity journal you choose to send, which go to the parent or teacher account for marking.
This is coursework, not analytics, so it is kept whatever you chose about cookies — a gradebook that forgot your work because you declined marketing cookies would simply be broken. Nothing here is recorded unless you are signed in. The multiple-choice part of the exam is marked inside your own browser and is never sent to us at all, whether you are signed in or not.
If you fill in a form
Whatever you type into it — contact, newsletter, Ambassador, retailer or referral — plus the IP address it came from, so we can recognise spam.
2. Why we collect it
- To run the thing you asked for — send your order, deliver your confirmation code, answer your message.
- To know what is working. Which articles get read, which pages lose people, whether an ad brought anyone.
- To email you — but only if you asked us to. Every marketing email has an unsubscribe link, and it works.
We do not sell your data, rent it, or hand it to advertisers.
3. Cookies and local storage
We use your browser's storage rather than traditional tracking cookies:
- Necessary — your cart, your sign-in token, your chosen layout and sound settings, and your answer to the cookie banner. These are needed for the site to work and are not optional.
- Analytics — the visitor and session ids described above. These only exist if you accepted.
There are no third-party advertising trackers on this site.
4. Who else sees it
- Stripe — payment processing, when you pay by card.
- Amazon Web Services — hosting. The site and database run on AWS.
- Xogos Gaming — if you came in through the Xogos platform, your progress and coin awards are shared with them, because that is the account you are playing under.
- Our email provider — to deliver confirmation codes and receipts.
5. How long we keep it
- Read counts — pruned automatically after about 13 months. There is nothing personal in them to delete.
- Analytics — pruned automatically after about 13 months.
- Player accounts — until you ask us to delete them.
- Lesson progress and written work — kept with the account it belongs to, so a parent can still see it next term. Deleted with the account.
- Orders — kept as long as we need them for tax and accounting.
6. Your rights
Wherever you live, you can ask us for a copy of what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. If you are in the EU or UK (GDPR) or California (CCPA/CPRA) those are legal rights; we apply the same policy to everyone regardless.
Email office@historicalconquest.com with what you want and the address you used. We will action it within 30 days. We will never charge you for it, and we will never treat you differently for asking.
You can also withdraw analytics consent at any time by clearing this site's data in your browser, which resets the banner.
7. Children
Historical Conquest is used by students, often young ones. We do not knowingly collect personal information from a child under 13 without a parent or school acting on their behalf. Students who arrive through the Xogos Gaming platform are managed under their school or parent account there. If you believe a child has given us information directly, email us and we will remove it.
8. Security
Traffic is encrypted in transit. Credentials live in server configuration and never in the code or in the browser. We are a small company, not a bank — we have taken sensible measures, and we would rather tell you that plainly than claim something stronger.
9. Changes
If this policy changes materially we will say so on the site rather than quietly editing the page.
